Emotional Wellbeing

Emotional Well-being is essentially the recognition of feelings and learning to express them according to the situation along with managing the factors that affect emotions. We can support children in understanding their emotions in many different ways, but first we have to make them feel supported, loved, valued, accepted and safe.

The starting point of understanding emotions is knowing what they are, defining them and talking about them. We have all seen the hand going up and down an adults face as they say happy, with a smile and sad by downturning their smile. There are, however, more emotions to learn and we have several resources which can help children and open up the ability to talk about them and the impact that they have on themselves and others.

Remember that by meeting a child’s emotional needs the aim will be to increase their resilience, helping to build a strong foundation for future success throughout their lives.
